Introducing EOL3

Visual

Identifying specimens with the internet used to be impossible. EOL displayed only small pictures of heterogeneous quality. The new EOL3 now features curated, high-definition pictures exclusively, allowing close examination of specimens and easy identification.

Design

EOL3 has its users in mind. Whether they are students, nature lovers or scientists, they all look for precise and clear information. We removed all the clutter from previous versions of EOL, so that users now have instant access to data through a clean interface that is easy to navigate. Pictures, maps and texts are easy to read and use. There are no more barriers between you and the content - between knowledge and your work.

Collaborative

Anyone can add content to EOL3. It’s fast, easy, and ensures EOL3 is up to date. By contributing to EOL3, you’re helping build a modern monography of every living creature on Earth. The EOL3 community is a vibrant one, join it and share your knowledge with the whole world !

Well read

References are arguably the most important tool for scientists. EOL3 makes it easy to consult a species’ bibliography and/or to modify it. Books and articles available online can even be downloaded right from EOL3. With References, all knowledge about the species you’re interested in is available in one place.

Universal

EOL3 is free, and is available online at www.eol.org, as well as on mobile devices through applications on Android and iOS. You can take EOL3 with you anywhere, from the field to the lab, from the playground to the classroom, from your desktop to your phone.

Why isn't EOL like this yet?

Unfortunately, right now EOL has kind of lost its focus. As we are not affiliated with EOL and can't change it from the inside, we are proposing this redesign in order to make EOL relevant again. EOL should be useful to the general public as well as to taxonomists, who are inventorying life on Earth. EOL ought to make this inventorying process faster. That’s what we hope to accomplish with this massive overhaul.
